Yet another update

Yes, I don't post much. No, I really don't plan on posting again for awhile. So! here's whats new

Woring at Best Buy (need to update that here don't I...) as a media rep...so basically I sell video games, which is actually pretty fun considering my previous jobs. However, that's mostlikely going to change soon, as the bastards have been cutting my hours, because best buy as a whole didn't do too well during x-mas and are cutting salary budgets to make up for it. SO! It's very possible that I will be working at Nextel/Sprint very soon.

Goin to ASU (if ya'll havnt noticed :P), taking 15 credit hours (not too much, not too little)...classes are mat 210, acc 230, phi 101, ecn 111, and pgs 101. Accounting is a bitch...like no joke, too much homework for only 3 credits. But its required, so I cant bitch much...*shrugs*. I'm still trying to figure out whether I'm going to stick with this major anyways...maybe I'll try something new next semester...

Beyond that, i've been playing World of Warcraft (alot)...and RF online (another pimp game)....oh! and i've gone back to playing ddr again since super nova is coming out soon (w00t!).

So that's about it for now, if you have any questions let me know :P

phi 101 notes

Philosophy 101

2-20-06

A Priori Knowledge

Classical answer: Intuition- A supposedly direct but non-observational access to independent matters of fact

This is a terrible idea:
-Intuitions conflict with one another
-Even if they didn’t we would have no reason to suppose that they are correct
-Even if they are correct there can even in principle be no casual explanation of that fact

Intuition is just prejudice in disguise.
But what else is there??
Intuition might be tolerable…but only if there was only ONE:
Mathematics Geometry
Logic Set Theory…
In the 19th century two different non-Euclidian geometries were discovered
Each rejected the parallel postulate

Parallel Postulate: given any line and any point not on that line, there is exactly one line through that point that is parallel to that first line.
Riemann: No parallel lines
Lobachevski: Many (infinite) parallel lines

Which one is right?
Is Euclid obviously right?
Are the others really unimaginable?
Are they merely toys with no real use?
By the late 19th century they all seemed equally good mathematically.
So whatever obviousness (or intuitive rightness) that Euclidian geometry once had is irrelevant or misleading.

Then David Hilbert has a good idea:
1. Distinguish mathematical geometry from physical geometry (surveying)
2. Think of the axioms as implicit definitions of the geometrical terms
This would be a different kind of definition
No synonyms; no replacements
Still, what else do you know about the meanings of the geometrical terms?
So what? The geometries are no longer in conflict
Each is true (by definition)
No need to choose, so no need for intuition

By the 1930’s it had become clear to many that there were many apparently conflicting logics
In 1932 Rudolf Carnap had the idea to treat logic (and all the other so-called a priori fields, including philosophy) in the way that Hilbert had treated mathematical geometry.
1. Especially logic and mathematics were to be thought of as true in virtue of meaning (analytic)
a. Like: ‘no bachelor is married’, but rather more interesting
b. No need for further justification
i. Definition as a regress stopper
ii. No need for intuition at all
2. Some logics (or mathematics) may be better than others but only in respect of utility, not truth
a. Of course, inconsistency is about the most extreme form of disutility.
3. So, philosophic fights can cease, and we can get down to the real work of conceptual engineering
a. It didn’t happen that way
One of Carnap’s friends, W.V.O. Quine, rejected the idea that logic and mathematics are true by definition (analytic)
Quine has:
-An Objection to the idea of analyticality.
-An Alternative account of our knowledge in logic and mathematics (and science generally)
-It also rejects intuition

*Yawn* Well fuck.
I have to go back to school soon....damnit. No, I'm not more profain then when you last read my journal, but going back to school isn't a very pleasant thought.

Anyways, I shall now recap my summer, as I have not posted since the start of it. hmmmm...

Ok, I worked at Oasis...at the beginning of summer, 40 hours or more a week....at the end of summer 20 hours a week, then I quit because the management sucks there, and everyone is overly stuck up, and I just couldnt stand it anymore. But I only quit like....a week ago...so I still havnt had much of a vacation.

I also had summer school at MCC....101 102 eng....It was ok, really easy too. I wish I picked later hours though, since the class usually only lasted 15-30 mins....so I had to wake up at 6:00am every mon-thurs just to go to class between 7:00-7:15am and then drive home, go to sleep for another 5 hours, then get up for work......ugh...atleast I got an A in 101, I will probably get the same in 102...

I finally bought me a new computer! ^.^ And I built it myself, with Scott's supervision... I really didn't want to fuck anything up, so I would be like "Does this look ok?" every 5 seconds. It was a fun 20 mins. The computer cost me 1004 bucks, it's a little shuttle pc. It's really fast, and and and...I love it. The sexy monitor cost me another 600 bucks, but it was well worth it. It's 20.1" viewsonic LCD....Very awesomeness.

So after my computer expenditures, I have about 1200 left of work money that I have saved. Although, It will probably be used on a new sound system, as now my dad might buy me a new, more gas efficent car. The tahoe is a very gas guzzling vehicle, and I am tired of spending 10-20 A DAY on gas...and yes, with my own damn money, i'm not THAT spoiled. Soooo...I am trying to convince him of this blue beetle vw...It's little, cute, and gets double MPG than the tahoe or more.

So that's basically my summer...Now for school...ugh

I got my schedule. I have Varsity band, then Economics, psychology, and the AP gov...or something to that variation. All I know is that I am going to graduate in December in stead of may, in order to go to E3 this year. Yes, I actually am graduating early just to go to a damn convention. But it is a nice convention, that I really really want to go to, that is on the same days as senior finals. Thus I shall start school at ASU in the Spring...Which reminds me, i need to turn in transcripts....

I'll post again in a few months..

So last night I was on the phone with Garrett til 2am, as that was when his mother walked in and toldhim to get off the phone and go to sleep. This conversation lasted a mere two hours, and I remember going to sleep after he had to leave. Then at somepoint later, I recieved another call. I think I was half asleep, because I remember it being garrett again, but I don't remember anything else about the conversation. I talked to garrett today and he said he didn't call again after our previous conversation. Sure enough, my phone said someone with a restricted number called me that late at night, and I think I passed them off as Garrett in my sleep. So if your reading this and you called me last night around 2:30ish, Do let me know. I really want to know what the conversation was about.

Anyways, my day today sort of was just....a monday I guess. I have a whole ton of biology stuff to do...that I havnt done..That I dont plan on doing til tommorrow. I also have to work tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. Atleast tues and wed are 2 hour shifts, but thurs is a 6 hour shift from 330-930. It's money though (atleast that's what I keep telling myself). Other than that, my life is pretty easy and stress free.

Who all is going to Prom? I was thinking  about it, but then 30-45 bucks a ticket sure sucks. That and I have never been a fan of dances..."O but this one is better." Why? because of free snacks and drinks? That the LEAST I should recieve for the amount of the ticket. In my opinion, it's outrageous to charge that much. But whatever, it's for "charity." Lame. But then again, Prom is suppose to be special or something. So that's why I am debating whether to go....That and finding a date...It would really suck to go to prom date-less...as it is a "special" thing. I know I'll go senior year...

Now more directed to people of my Biology class: What is up with ms. doerr always yelling at me about something? "You need to study more"...."hows your grades...you need to do better" HOLY GOD WOMAN. I have A's and B's in all my classes! For some odd reason she has dubbed me the struggling child. It really sucks...more so it's really annoying. Anyone remember when we were discussing english class at one point? She said I should try harder in that class....She may be right if I didn't have an A, or if the class had something useful to learn in it. O! and she says I'm against dress code almost everyday. So I'm a slut struggling student, that's awesome. Some of my wardrobe yes, is cutting close to code, but has she seen what some of those damn cheerleaders wear? Yea, you know they don't get dress coded. I call it racist against anti-cheer.
Goodnight
